Dog lovers are invited to take part in a guided tour of the building, as the organisation celebrates its 150th year

The Kennel Club has announced a tour of its London building on Wednesday 14 June.

Visitors will be able to experience the world-class Kennel Club Art Gallery and Library, and to see more of The Kennel Club art collection on a guided tour of the building, delivered by expert curators.

One of the highlights on the tour will be the special exhibition celebrating 150 years of The Kennel Club and the evolution of the bond between dogs and owners.

From being founded in 1873 by Mr Sewallis Evelyn Shirley MP, and 12 other members, to becoming one of the largest organisations in the UK devoted to dog health, welfare and training, a collection of original paintings, historical artefacts, vintage photographs and more will be on display in the special exhibition, mapping The Kennel Club’s journey from its beginning 150 years ago, to now, and the evolution of our canine companions.

Other highlights of The Kennel Club art collection include the unique opportunity to see the world-famous Crufts Best in Show trophy, the Keddell Memorial Trophy, up close; one of the most well-known dog paintings, An Early Canine Meeting; a Celtic coin dating from AD 8 – AD 41, which is decorated with the image of a hound as well as a variety of paintings, drawings, prints, trophies, sculptures, ceramics and many more.

The Kennel Club, which was recently granted a Royal Prefix to mark the 150th anniversary of its existence, is an unparalleled source of information on dog welfare, dog training and dog breeding, and guests visiting will have the opportunity to learn more about the history of The Kennel Club and the organisation’s efforts to improve the lives of dogs in the UK.

Each tour begins at 10.30 and costs £5 per person, with refreshments served on arrival.. Places are limited so visitors wishing to join a tour must book in advance via phone or email. For an additional charge, guests also have the unique opportunity to enjoy a three-course lunch in The Kennel Club dining room, normally reserved for members and not open to members of the public, which includes coffee, petit fours, a glass of sparkling wine on arrival and a glass of wine with the meal. Please note that there is limited availability for lunch.
