The Kennel Club has today (11 May) welcomed the animal welfare commitments cited in the Queen’s Speech.
Commenting on the legislation and action plan outlined, Dr Ed Hayes, Head of Public Affairs at The Kennel Club said: “We are delighted that the Government is looking to prioritise, improve and refine legislation to govern animal welfare, and that this will sit high on the agenda during the next Parliament.
“Reform in this area has cross-party backing, as well as much support from the animal-loving British public, and today’s speech suggests this is going to be kicked into action. 2020 has been a year like no other and the rise in pet ownership during the pandemic has brought dog health and welfare to the forefront, and we must work together to ensure standards are strengthened.
“As we await further details of the commitments outlined, we look forward working closely with MPs to support plans and identify opportunities to ‘build back better’ following the pandemic - for the sake of our four-legged friends - as well as the strategy and opportunities related to the EU exit.”
