A portrait of the Crufts 2020 Best in Show winner, Maisie the Wirehaired Dachshund (Ch Silvae Trademark), was unveiled at Crufts 2022 on Friday 11 March in the Resorts World Arena at the NEC, Birmingham.
Artist Anne Zoutsos presented the painting to Crufts Chairman, Tom Mather, in front of thousands of spectators in the arena. Anne and Tom were joined for the presentation by Maisie and her proud owner, Kim McCalmont.
Following the presentation, Kim took home the original portrait and a limited edition print was transported to London to become part of the Kennel Club Art Collection, and will soon be on display.
Anne Zoutsos is a full-time artist and has painted professionally for over 30 years. Anne is based in Surrey and her work, including paintings of wild animals and dog portraiture, can be found in collections all over the world.
Speaking after the presentation, Anne said: “I was delighted to be asked to paint the Wirehaired Dachshund, Maisie to commemorate her win of Best in Show in 2020.
“She is a very photogenic girl and it was an absolute pleasure to paint her. As with all my Crufts commissions, I like to add little extra elements to the painting. Dachshunds were originally bred to hunt badgers and so I had thought it would be nice to include a badger toy in the painting and when I found that Crufts had made such a toy, it seemed the perfect addition. I also added a slim collar around Maisie’s neck so that I could paint in a little tag with the letter ‘R’ – the symbol for Registered Trademark – part of Maisie’s Kennel Club registered name. Under the tag I added a small pearl as the name Maisie means pearl.”
