Flyball team, Watson’s Legacy, took the top prize on Sunday 10 March, winning the final at the world’s greatest dog show, Crufts.
Watson’s Legacy is made up of dogs and handlers from Stoke-on-Trent. The team impressed the crowd at the Birmingham NEC and beat off competition to reach an exciting final against Roadrunners Beep Beep at Crufts. These teams competed in eight qualifiers held at a range of shows during 2023 for the chance to make it to the 'grand prix' of flyball at Crufts.
The winning team consisted of:
Epyc, a crossbreed, and Carl Simmonds
Optic, a crossbreed, and Christina Opperman
Autumn, a Border Collie, and Quinton Opperman
Comet, a Border Collie, and Steph Leese
Zander, a Border Collie, and Emma Jones
Colin, a Border Collie, and Rachel Calvert
Team captain, Christinna Opperman, said of the team's win: “It was an experience you can’t describe to anyone unless you’ve done it. It is just amazing!
“Roadrunners Beep Beep are the fastest team in the world and renowned for being amazing, they are so fast but they had a few issues where we were able to take the opportunity. We were clean and consistent, and that really paid off. The dogs and the handlers have been absolutely incredible!”
Helen Kerfoot, Crufts Show Manager, said: “The Watson’s Legacy team put on an incredible and exciting show in the arena and a huge congratulations to all of the dogs and owners in the team for securing their win.
“It was clear to see how dedicated and passionate the team are, and their teamwork was evident throughout. Congratulations Watson’s Legacy!”
