Applying to hold a Young Kennel Club Class

The Young Kennel Club invites registered clubs and societies to apply to host a YKC qualifier in 2025. These qualifiers, which can range from handling and stakes at dog shows to agility and obedience competitions, offer an opportunity for young kennel club members to gain experience and compete in a friendly environment. Clubs interested in hosting must adhere to the YKC's rules and regulations, which include ensuring proper event facilities, providing qualified judges, and maintaining safety standards for participants and dogs. To apply, prospective clubs and societies must complete the YKC Show Application Form, which can be found at the end of this page.

Club requirements

Firstly, ensure that the following are true:

  1. Your club must be a fully REGISTERED CLUB (NOT a listed status club).
    • only applies to AGILITY, OBEDIENCE, STAKES & HANDLING
    • YKC DOG GROOMING qualifiers may be held by non-KC registered clubs.
  2. When holding YKC qualifiers, your show must be under either a Championship or Premier license.
    • This does not include non-KC disciplines, e.g. DOG GROOMING, FLYBALL & HANDLING
  3. You must have fully read and understood the YKC rules for the year you are applying for.
  4. You are able to hold the class at a time when YKC members can attend.
    • e.g. Weekends and School Holidays.
  5. If applying for Agility competitions, you must be able to accommodate the required ring size for a prestige Agility competition.
  6. You must be able to handle the entries, processing and return of results to the Kennel Club.
    • You must submit your results to the Kennel Club within 10 working days of the last day of your show.
    • In addition to normal entry requirements, you are also required to record the YKC member’s Name and their YKC membership number. These details must be attached to the results that you are submitting.
  7. Your show must comply with all current regulations found in the most up to date Kennel Club Year Book.
Important notes about Young Kennel Club competitions:

Your Show/Club/Society MUST apply to host YKC competitions every year, even if you’ve always held them. This helps us ensure we have the most up-to-date information about your club and that we're in touch with the correct show secretary.

  • Starting in 2025, the qualification year will shift to a start of October – end of September model. The exact dates will vary slightly each year as the YKC will account for weekends. For the first year of this change, the qualification period will run from 01 January 2025 to 30 September 2025 to determine who will be heading to Crufts in 2026.
  • Please note, agility will continue to observe its winter off-season, meaning no agility qualifiers will be held during that time. This applies to all YKC qualifications, including YKC Stakes.
  • Important: YKC results will only be accepted from shows listed on the YKC Qualifier calendar. If your show is not appearing on the calendar and you have received confirmation to host a qualifier, please contact the YKC as soon as possible to resolve the issue.
  • Applying to hold a YKC qualifier does not automatically mean approval. The YKC will confirm via email whether your application was successful and which competitions you’re approved to hold. Please also be aware, if you apply for multiple YKC qualifiers at the same show, you may be awarded all, some, or none of them. It’s important to carefully read your confirmation email to understand what has been approved.
Which shows get selected to hold YKC qualifiers:

If your club meets the “Club Requirements” outlined above, preference will be given to clubs that have successfully hosted YKC competitions in the past. However, we still encourage new applicants to apply, as selection will be based on how many YKC qualifiers are already in your area for each discipline, and how accessible your show is to YKC members. We particularly look for shows that are scheduled during times when YKC members are more likely to attend, such as weekends and school holidays.

Please note, while we would love to offer as many qualifiers as possible, the YKC has four days of competitions at Crufts in the YKC ring, running from 08:30 to 18:00. Unfortunately, this means we are limited by time and cannot continuously increase the number of qualifiers. Each discipline also varies in how many qualifiers can be awarded. For example, a single agility round takes approximately 60 seconds from ring entry to exit, whereas a High Flyers Obedience round can take up to 7 minutes. As a result, it's not possible to offer the same number of qualifiers for each discipline.
